Frizzy Hair & Pink Toe’s
S**T!! That’s the word I said (amongst others) when the diffuser fell off the hairdryer and cut my pinky toe as it landed. I have curly hair and if I don’t’ use the diffuser part of the hairdryer then…. my hair ends up looking like an old frayed mop that sat in the sun for 3 weeks. The funny thing is…..this little piece of (much needed) hairstyling equipment has been falling off for the last 3 weeks!!! What made today different than that last 3 weeks??? Well, I took it a little more personally when my pinky toe felt the impact and bled all the way to the medicine cabinet.
Isn’t that kind of how we get to the place where we are finally ready to reach out for help? When the difficult things happening in our lives really start to hurt. I could have solved my hairdryer dilemma 3 weeks ago the first time it occurred. A simple trip to Walmart to purchase a new hairdryer would have solved my problem AND left my pinky toe intact. But…. I waited…. I waited until it really hurt… until it cut my toe, required a Band-Aid, some ointment, and forced my yellow rug into the washing machine because it was covered in spots of blood.
Here’s the thing….. when we wait to seek out help, we prolong the hurt that began at the surface and then slowly winds its way through our lives like a giant boa encircling it’s prey. Not seeking help at the beginning can leave us in a really dark place. We can get to the point where we are fed up, burned out, and have nothing left to give anyone because we are an emotional mess.
This is where therapy can help. It can help at the beginning where the hurt initially surfaced. It allows us a place to vent and a place to just “be”, without judgment, without finger pointing or the infamous “I told you so”. Why wait for life to fall apart and “sting”? Therapy isn’t just “talking”. It’s about finding solutions in those areas of our life where we feel stuck.
When life first unravels…. instead of waiting for the sting to affect us physically…wouldn’t it be easier to reach out and get the support you need? A therapist is a highly trained professional whose role is to help you figure out the messiness in life. And…. life gets messy because we are human beings and things happen no matter how prepared we think we may be.
If you find yourself struggling and slipping into that dark place, call someone who can help guide you out of the darkness and into a place of love, warmth, and self-acceptance.
